Anemoi Marine Technologies, a pioneer in carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) rotor sails for maritime applications, has been awarded 1.2 million in funding under Round 6 of the U.K. s Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition (CMDC). The project will support the development of an industry-first folding rotor sail system for Kamsarmax and Panamax bulk carriers, aiming to enhance aerodynamic efficiency and lower emissions.

This investment underscores Anemoi s potential to support the UK in sustainable shipping as the maritime industry works to cut emissions, said Clare Urmston, CEO of Anemoi Marine Technologies.

The seven-month project will result in a prototype folding mechanism for Anemoi s 3.5-meter Rotor Sails, technology previously reserved for larger 5-meter units. The new system will enable easier lowering of sails during port operations, reducing operational hurdles and further integrating wind-assisted propulsion into commercial shipping. The initiative also includes aerodynamic refinements to boost fuel savings and emissions reduction beyond current models.

    Project partners include:

    • Pressure Design Hydraulics Engineers prototype manufacturing
    • Cape Horn Engineering and Stehr Consulting aerodynamic design
    • Victoria Steamship fleet insights from the bulk carrier segment
    • Connected Places Catapult market research and integration studies

With this funding, Anemoi solidifies its leadership in next-generation maritime wind propulsion, contributing to the UK s 136 million commitment to clean maritime innovation and sustainable coastal growth.
