Virgin Galactic has flown its first next-generation Spaceship, named Apeiron, to Spaceport America in New Mexico, marking the vehicle's transition from production to flight-test preparations. The spacecraft departed Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport in Arizona on October 28, 2026, attached to the company's carrier aircraft, Eve, and landed at its permanent operational base at 12:59 p.m. MDT.

The aircraft was piloted by Michael Masucci and Dan Alix, with flight test engineer Tori Crichton also on board. Earlier that day, Virgin Galactic unveiled Apeiron in its completed livery at the company's Spaceship Factory in Mesa, Arizona. The name, derived from an ancient Greek word meaning “boundless,” was selected through a public vote involving participants from more than 80 countries.

At Spaceport America, Virgin Galactic's engineering team will complete avionics software integration and validation while preparing the vehicle for its flight-test programme. Following successful testing, the company expects to begin commercial spaceflights aboard Apeiron in early Q2 2027.

The next-generation spacecraft has been developed to support higher flight frequency and longer operational service. Virgin Galactic has designed each vehicle for a target operating cadence of up to two flights per week and a service life exceeding 500 missions. These design objectives are intended to support the company's plans for scaling commercial spaceflight operations.

The production programme is also progressing at the Mesa facility, where assembly of a static test article and the second next-generation Spaceship is underway. The company is also preparing its rocket motor assembly line. Commercial operations for the second spacecraft are expected to begin in late Q2 or early Q3 2027.

The arrival of Apeiron marks a significant step in Virgin Galactic's next-generation fleet programme, with the company moving toward flight validation and the resumption of commercial spaceflight operations.
