SHD Composites, a California-based advanced materials manufacturer, is participating in the EcoSuite aircraft seating initiative with the supply of a glass fiber-reinforced bio-based epoxy prepreg system for aerospace interior applications.
Under the programme, SHD Composites will supply its FR308 bio-based resin system, a fully fire, smoke and toxicity (FST)-compliant material designed for aircraft interior applications. The resin is derived from a waste stream of cane sugar production and is engineered for use in reinforced composite structures.
EcoSuite brings together industry and institutional partners including Safran Seats GB, the UK Department for Business and Trade, the Aerospace Technology Institute, Innovate UK, and other industrial and academic stakeholders. The consortium aims to combine UK-based innovation with aerospace engineering expertise to develop seating systems that meet both performance and sustainability requirements.
FR308 is reinforced with 300gsm glass fibre and is positioned as an alternative to conventional phenolic prepregs used in aircraft interiors. The resin system is free from formaldehyde, phenol, and organic solvents, supporting improved health, safety, and environmental performance.
The EcoSuite initiative is scheduled to continue through the current development cycle, with partners working toward validation of sustainable seating systems for commercial aerospace use. SHD Composites will also present its materials portfolio at the Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg in April 2026.
