Petrobras has awarded Strohm B.V. and its Brazilian subsidiary Strohm Brasil a contract to supply thermoplastic composite pipe (TCP) for the Brazilian post-salt cluster. The agreement also covers qualification testing, engineering, field services, and support for offshore trials and installation.

The TCP will be used for water injection and gas lift applications at offshore water depths of up to 1,500 meters. As part of the project, Petrobras will assess the pipe under actual operating conditions, including handling and installation using conventional pipe-lay vessels from its fleet.

Strohm’s TCP is manufactured using carbon or glass fiber reinforcement combined with polyethylene or polyamide polymers. The fully bonded composite construction produces a lightweight, spoolable pipe that is easier to handle than conventional flexible or rigid pipeline solutions.

The composite pipe also provides corrosion resistance, which can reduce maintenance requirements in demanding subsea environments. Its ability to be supplied in long, continuous lengths and installed from relatively conventional offshore vessels can also simplify transportation and deployment.

The Petrobras contract adds another deepwater application to Strohm’s TCP track record. The company says its technology has already been deployed in subsea applications including flowlines, jumpers, risers, and downlines, with its deepest operating TCP reaching 2,140 meters of water depth.

The project also supports the wider adoption of thermoplastic composite pipelines in offshore energy infrastructure, where lightweight construction, corrosion resistance, spoolability, and installation efficiency can provide alternatives to traditional metallic and flexible pipe systems.
