Edgewing, the trinational prime contractor and design authority for the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), has been awarded a 4.6 billion contract to continue the development of the next-generation combat aircraft jointly being pursued by Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom.

Awarded by the GCAP Agency, which oversees the programme on behalf of the 3 partner governments, the 18-month contract will fund the completion of the programme's advanced concept and assessment activities while supporting the transition into the next stage of detailed aircraft design and engineering.

The agreement represents another major milestone for GCAP, providing long-term funding to accelerate collaborative design, technology maturation, and system development. Jointly financed by the three participating nations, the contract is intended to sustain programme momentum while strengthening international cooperation on one of the world's most ambitious next-generation combat aircraft initiatives.

The funding will support a broad range of engineering activities as the partners continue refining the aircraft's architecture, integrating advanced technologies, and preparing the programme for future development phases.

I am delighted to sign this international contract on behalf of the three GCAP nations Italy, Japan and the UK. It will enable the GCAP
Agency and Edgewing to continue making huge progress in all areas of delivery. The programme is vital for global security and defeating future threats, while sharing costs, technological advantages and creating highly skilled jobs in all three nations. With this long-term funding, the future of GCAP has never been more assured. I am excited about what we will achieve over the next 18 months and the opportunities we can create to grow the programme further, said Masami Oka, Chief Executive of the GCAP Agency.

GCAP aims to deliver a sixth-generation combat aircraft incorporating advanced digital technologies, next-generation sensors, autonomous systems, and highly integrated air combat capabilities. The programme also places significant emphasis on advanced manufacturing, lightweight materials, and digital engineering to improve aircraft performance while supporting efficient production.

The latest contract reinforces the long-term commitment of the three partner nations to jointly develop an advanced combat air system, while promoting technology sharing, industrial collaboration, and the expansion of highly skilled aerospace and defense manufacturing capabilities across Europe and Asia.
