Alberta Innovates has commissioned the first industry-accessible carbon fibre production research facility in Canada, located in Alberta.
The facility uses bitumen feedstock derived from Alberta's oil sands as the precursor for carbon fibre production, offering a pathway to valorise a domestic resource.
Mike Mahon, CEO of Alberta Innovates, provided a quote on the strategic significance of the facility for advancing Canada's composites sector.
Brian Jean, Minister of Jobs, Economy, and Trade, and Eleanor Olszewski, Minister of Technology and Innovation, also provided quotes supporting the initiative.
The facility was developed in part through the $20M Carbon Fibre Grand Challenge program. Yasmine Abdin and the team at Fibernx were also involved, providing commentary on the facility's capabilities.
The installation includes feedstock reactors, spinners, and pilot production lines designed for industry collaboration and R&D.
