Strohm, the world s first
and leading producer of thermoplastic composite pipe (TCP), has
successfully completed its first offshore field trials with Petrobras in
Brazil s Campos Basin. Conducted at water depths of approximately 1,500
metres, the trials confirmed the pipe s durability and ease of installation
under real-world subsea conditions.
The test programme, carried out
in partnership with Petrobras, evaluated TCP using the same methodologies as conventional
flexible pipes. Assessments included crushing and deep immersion
performance (DIP) tests, subsea first- and second-end vertical connection
trials, and installation in a catenary configuration. The pipe remained
submerged for 24 hours to validate operational behaviour.
The results confirmed the TCP s
suitability for post-salt applications, while also highlighting its strong
potential for pre-salt fields. Resistant to CO -induced stress corrosion
cracking, one of the region s key challenges, Strohm s TCP offers a sustainable
and cost-efficient solution. With a significantly smaller carbon footprint than
conventional flexible pipes, TCP reduces both transport and installation costs,
and its light weight enables alternative, lower-cost installation methods such
as subsea pallet deployment.
Renato Bastos, VP Brazil at
Strohm, commented: This successful phase marks the culmination of a
remarkable collaboration between Petrobras and Strohm. The field trial results
prove the innovation and quality TCP brings to the industry and keep us on
track to become Petrobras leading composite pipe supplier.
Gustavo Calazans, Subsea
Engineering General Manager at Petrobras, added: This milestone
contributes directly to our Subsea Industrialization Program and supports the
establishment of a new Strohm plant in Brazil. With our position as the largest
flexible pipe consumer worldwide, Strohm s entry to the market enhances local
competitiveness, content, and cost efficiency.
The success of the trial
positions TCP as a transformative solution for Brazil s deepwater sector, with
Petrobras and Strohm poised to accelerate its adoption in future offshore
developments.
