Hexcel
Corporation (NYSE: HXL), a global leader in advanced
composites, has introduced a next-generation
Type IV carbon overwrap pressure vessel (COPV), developed in collaboration
with HyPerComp Engineering Inc. (HEI).
The vessel is manufactured with Hexcel s
high-performance HexTow IM11-R/12K carbon fiber and is designed for
critical aerospace and space applications.
Hexcel s IM11-R/12K fiber
enables the next generation of composite pressure vessels, delivering
outstanding burst pressure performance and reliability, said Lyndon
Smith, President, Americas &
Global Fibers, Hexcel.
Type IV COPVs feature a
polymer liner fully wrapped in continuous
carbon fiber, offering corrosion resistance and substantial weight savings
compared to traditional metal tanks. These vessels are ideal for storing
hydrogen, helium, and nitrogen in demanding environments such as launch
vehicles and space systems. The design ensures excellent processability during
filament winding and high translation of fiber properties, meeting the rising
demand for lightweight, high-strength pressure solutions.
We have a high level of
collaboration with Hexcel, resulting in the development of COPVs for extreme
environments. Initial testing has shown excellent fiber strength and burst
pressure performance, said Jake Walker, Chief Innovation Officer at HyPerComp. The
combination of Hexcel s fiber technology and our engineering expertise sets a high
benchmark for future COPV qualification.
Hexcel and HyPerComp are
advancing toward certification of these Type IV vessels, with applications
expected to extend beyond aerospace into broader high-performance markets. The
new vessel was showcased at CAMX 2025 in Orlando, Florida (booth F17)
from September 9 11.
