The Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology and
Advanced Materials (IFAM), Stade, in collaboration with Autonox Robotics
GmbH and Siemens AG, will debut a robotic milling solution at
automatica 2025 (June 2427, Munich). This new system combines industrial
robotics with machine-tool-level precision, specifically targeting high-performance
machining of materials including fibre composites, aluminum, and tempered steel.
Showcased in hall A4 at Autonox Robotics booth A4-329 and Siemens booth 303 in hall B6, the Machine Tool Robot (MTR) introduces an entirely new class of machining technology. Combining model-based control, innovative drive systems, and an optimized mechanical structure, the MTR achieves machining tolerances of up to 0.1 mm, making it ideal for complex, high-speed composite part production. Enhanced disturbance rejection and dynamic error compensation enable increased material removal rates and productivity.
Unlike traditional gantry systems, this space-efficient solution pairs an articulated robot with a linear axis, eliminating the need for special foundations and supporting modular, flexible production lines.
Fraunhofer IFAM also introduces CaliRob, a software tool for model-based calibration of robotic systems and linear axes. It significantly improves accuracy by correcting system deviations, ensuring reliable precision even in dynamic industrial settings.
This advancement offers manufacturers a compact, adaptable alternative to CNC machines, particularly valuable for composite applications in aerospace and mobility.
