The Advanced Carbons Council (ACC) has announced the official
publication of the Graphene Classification Framework as an ISO
technical specification, marking a major step toward standardizing
graphene-related materials for commercial use.
Published as ISO/TS 9651:2025, Nanotechnologies Classification framework for graphene related 2D
materials , the document defines the key characteristics of graphene-related
2D materials in both sheet and particle forms, alongside applicable measurement
methods for industrial applications. The framework also introduces a
consistent naming syntax and a technical data sheet template to
improve transparency in the marketplace.
Developed over several years with contributions from more than 100
subject matter experts, the classification framework addresses a critical
gap in the standardization of nanomaterials such as graphene, carbon
nanotubes (CNT), and related carbon-based fillers. These materials are
increasingly used in composites to enhance performance, reduce weight,
and improve sustainability.
The initiative began with the Graphene Council (now ACC), which
recognized the need for a globally accepted classification system to support quality
assurance, buyer confidence, and wider commercialization. By aligning
producers, end users, and testing standards, ISO/TS 9651:2025 is expected to
accelerate adoption of graphene materials in advanced manufacturing sectors.
