For the first time since early 2022, Composites Germany s biannual market survey has recorded a positive
turn in sentiment within the fibre-reinforced
plastics (FRP) industry. The 25th
edition of the survey, conducted among member companies of AVK, Composites United, and partner VDMA,
highlights an improving outlook for Germany and Europe, even as global
assessments remain cautious.
While the sector continues to face challenges, such as a 2024
decline in European market volume, intensified competition from Asia, and
sluggish performance in key application sectors like transport and
construction, the majority of surveyed companies report having consolidated
their market positions domestically and within Europe.
Regional Confidence Gap
Respondents expressed greater optimism for the business climate in
Germany and Europe compared to the global market. Almost one-third expect their European operations to improve in the near
term, versus only 20% anticipating
global growth. This divergence is linked to geopolitical instability,
export pressures from U.S. policies, and persistent weakness in Asia s
transport sector.
Investment and Employment Outlook
The improved sentiment is reflected in a brighter investment
climate. The share of companies considering machinery investments rose from 42% in early 2025 to 50%, although
fewer are making immediate commitments. Personnel planning remains cautious,
with 15% expecting workforce expansion
and 27% foreseeing reductions.
Sectoral Growth Prospects
Survey results point to growth opportunities in aviation and
construction/infrastructure, although German construction remains constrained
until at least 2026. Mobility, still the largest composites application area,
is undergoing significant disruption and remains a concern. Material trends
show slight gains for carbon
fibre-reinforced plastics (CFRP) and a modest decline for glass fibre-reinforced plastics (GFRP).
Composites Index Turns Upward
The Composites Index, an aggregate measure of current conditions
and future expectations, has turned largely positive, driven by optimism for domestic and European markets.
Industry leaders believe innovation, new application fields, and coordinated
market development efforts will be critical to sustaining momentum.
