Stratasys has launched its new F870 FDM system, a large-format additive manufacturing platform designed for production-support applications, with Toyota Production Engineering and Rivian Automotive already adopting the system for evaluation. The platform targets factory-floor tooling, manufacturing aids, large fixtures, assembly tools, inspection gauges, and advanced prototyping.
The F870 features a 1,000 × 610 × 610 mm (39.4 × 24 × 24 in.) build volume and a fully heated chamber designed for large-format production. Its material portfolio includes Nylon 12CF, ASA, ABS, and FDM ABS Draft, with Nylon 12CF incorporating carbon fiber to provide the strength, stiffness, and durability required for demanding tooling and fixture applications.
Toyota Production Engineering is evaluating the platform at its facility in Georgetown, Kentucky, while Rivian is assessing it in Plymouth, Michigan. Both companies are exploring applications ranging from factory-floor tooling and manufacturing aids to prototyping workflows.
The large build capacity is intended to reduce dependence on conventionally machined tooling, fixtures, and production aids, which can involve lengthy machining lead times. The F870 is designed to produce these components with the repeatability, durability, and throughput required for factory environments.
For composite manufacturing, the integration of carbon-fiber-reinforced Nylon 12 is particularly relevant. The material enables production of lightweight but stiff and durable tooling and fixtures, extending FDM beyond prototyping toward production-support applications in automotive manufacturing.
Stratasys is showcasing the F870 at IMTS 2026 in Chicago from September 14–19, with the system positioned as part of its broader expansion of production-focused large-format additive manufacturing.
