Toray Carbon Fibers Europe has announced the operational
start-up of a new carbon fiber
production facility at its
Abidos site in southwest France, marking a significant expansion of Europe s
advanced materials manufacturing base.
The new line will produce T300 and high-modulus (HM)
carbon fibers, increasing the plant s total annual capacity from 5,000
to 6,000 tonnes. The facility is expected to be fully operational in the
second half of 2026, aligning with the company s previously announced expansion
roadmap.
Strategically, this move is less about incremental volume
and more about supply chain sovereignty. European OEMs, particularly in
aerospace, defense, and energy, are facing rising pressure to localize
sourcing, reduce geopolitical exposure, and stabilize lead times. Toray s
expanded footprint directly addresses these constraints by strengthening regional
availability of high-performance carbon fibers.
The investment is also demand-driven. Increasing build rates
in commercial aircraft, advanced mobility platforms, and energy
infrastructure are accelerating the need for medium- and high-modulus
carbon fibers, materials that are critical for achieving weight reduction
without compromising structural performance.
From an industry standpoint, this development reinforces a
structural shift: carbon fiber is no longer a niche material, it is becoming strategic
infrastructure.
Capacity expansions like this are not just about meeting current demand; they are about pre-positioning for sustained growth in composites-intensive sectors, including hydrogen storage, electrification, and next-generation aerospace platforms. In a market increasingly defined by material availability, qualification timelines, and supply reliability, Toray s move signals a clear intent, to anchor itself as a long-term supply chain enabler in Europe s composites ecosystem, rather than just a material supplier.
Reinforcing a Strong, High Performance European Supply
Chain
With this investment in a new carbon fiber production
facility, Toray Carbon Fibers Europe demonstrates its commitment to supporting
the expansion of the European industry. This new capacity directly addresses:
By strengthening its production facilities at the heart of
the European Union, Toray Carbon Fibers Europe is able to provide its customers
with:
This scaling up aligns fully with Toray s long term strategy to stay one step ahead of market demand. Toray Carbon Fibers Europe thus proves its long-term commitment to supporting European customers growth by providing a secure and reliable supply of locally produced high-performance carbon fiber.
Driving Your Projects with Technical Expertise
In addition to offering the largest production capacity and portfolio in Europe from standard to high modulus, in two sizes ranging from 3K to 24K, Toray Carbon Fibers Europe also provides comprehensive support to its customers, including:
Customers have access to engineers specialized in carbon fibers and composite materials. The team provides guidance throughout development, from early studies to full industrialization. Their in depth knowledge of composite manufacturing processes allows them to offer technical recommendations tailored to a wide range of applications: aerospace, defence, automotive, marine, sports, civil engineering, oil & gas, electrification, renewable energies, hydrogen, and more. This expertise relies on close collaboration with the technical center and in-house laboratories.
