Toray Carbon Fibers Europe has announced the operational start-up of a new carbon fiber production facility at its Abidos site in southwest France, marking a significant expansion of Europe's advanced materials manufacturing base.
The new line will produce T300 and high-modulus (HM) carbon fibers, increasing the plant's total annual capacity from 5,000 to 6,000 tonnes. The facility is expected to be fully operational in the second half of 2026.
Strategically, this move addresses supply chain sovereignty. European OEMs in aerospace, defense, and energy face rising pressure to localize sourcing, reduce geopolitical exposure, and stabilize lead times. Increasing build rates in commercial aircraft, advanced mobility platforms, and energy infrastructure are accelerating the need for medium- and high-modulus carbon fibers.
