SGMW Industrializes Bamboo Fiber Composites for Automotive Interiors

SAIC-GM-Wuling (SGMW) has industrialized the use of bamboo fiber-reinforced composites in automotive interiors, bringing a natural-fiber material into series production across more than 20 vehicle models. The program was developed with the International Bamboo and Rattan Centre (ICBR) and other partners as part of an effort to establish a complete supply chain for bamboo-based automotive components.

The composite material is manufactured using locally sourced bamboo from Guangxi and is now used across 11 types of interior components, including headliners, rear seat panels, luggage-compartment liners, sun visors, and center floor mats. SGMW has established one bamboo-fiber production line and two composite-panel production lines in Guangxi, with combined annual capacity exceeding 4,000 tonnes of raw fiber and 200,000 square meters of finished panels.

The finished panels contain at least 75% bamboo fiber by weight and have a density of 0.5 g/cm³ or lower. The material records a flexural modulus of 257.3 MPa, while a deep-drawing compression process enables forming depths exceeding 25 cm, helping the composite accommodate complex three-dimensional interior geometries that can be difficult to manufacture with natural fibers.

SGMW's manufacturing process combines interfacial toughening, staged pressure molding, and airflow-mechanical fiber spreading. A low-melting-point polymer treatment improves bonding between the bamboo fibers and resin, while controlled molding pressure helps limit void formation. The fiber-spreading process produces more uniform mats for continuous production.

The material also offers environmental advantages compared with conventional plastics. SGMW reports near-zero formaldehyde emissions, approximately 0.55 kg less carbon emissions per kilogram of material, and a natural degradation rate exceeding 90% within 360 days. The bamboo components have also achieved more than 20% average weight reduction per part in the company's demonstrations.

The bamboo composite has already entered production on models including the Hongguang MINIEV, Bingo, Xingguang, Yunhai, and Huajing S. SGMW plans to extend the material's use across its entire vehicle lineup from 2026, marking a shift from demonstration-scale natural-fiber applications toward broader industrial deployment in automotive interiors.
