SABIC has expanded its portfolio of sustainable engineering thermoplastics with the introduction of a new LNP ELCRIN compound incorporating 75% post-consumer recycled (PCR) content. The material is the company's first carbon fiber-reinforced specialty compound based on recycled feedstock and is designed to support circularity initiatives without compromising mechanical performance.

The new LNP ELCRIN DC0051RC1 compound is formulated using polycarbonate (PC) resin reinforced with carbon fiber, delivering a combination of high stiffness, dimensional stability, and low warpage for structural applications. The material has been developed primarily for consumer electronics housings, including laptops and other thin-wall devices requiring high mechanical strength and flame-retardant performance.

Despite its high recycled content, the compound achieves a UL94 V0 flame-retardant rating at a wall thickness of 0.8 mm. According to SABIC, maintaining stringent flame-retardant performance while incorporating significant levels of recycled material presented a complex formulation challenge that was addressed through the company's specialty materials expertise.

In addition to supporting lightweight product designs through thin-wall molding, the compound provides the rigidity and dimensional accuracy required for large structural electronic components. The formulation also utilizes non-halogenated flame-retardant chemistry, eliminating chlorinated and brominated additives while helping reduce potential environmental and health impacts.

SABIC supports customers by developing new materials that enhance circularity, said Sergi Monros, Vice President of SABIC's Specialties Business Unit. But we do more than incorporate recycled, upcycled or bio-based content in our specialty thermoplastics. Our formulation experts also achieve high levels of performance, aesthetics and processability. For instance, our new LNP ELCRIN compound combines a high percentage of recycled content with many desirable properties. We re committed to helping customers improve circularity without sacrificing quality.

The launch reflects the growing demand for advanced engineering compounds that combine recycled content with the structural, thermal, and safety requirements of modern electronic devices. By integrating carbon fiber reinforcement with high PCR content, SABIC aims to help manufacturers advance sustainability goals while maintaining the performance standards expected for premium consumer electronics.
