Hexcel Corporation and Specialty Materials have announced the development of a new high modulus, high compression unidirectional prepreg based on Specialty Materials' Hy-Bor® technology.
Hy-Bor® combines Hexcel's HexTow HM63 high modulus carbon fibre with boron fibre in a hybrid unidirectional prepreg format, delivering greater than 2× improvement in compression strength, open-hole compression (OHC), and flexural strength compared to carbon-only alternatives.
The development has been supported through a Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase II contract, reflecting defence sector interest in the technology.
Imad Atallah from Specialty Materials and Monica Rommel from Hexcel provided quotes on the performance advantages and potential applications of the new Hy-Bor® prepreg system.
