General Atomics AeroTec Systems (GA-ATS) has completed the maiden flight of its Do228 NXT STOL demonstrator aircraft, marking a major milestone in the development of the modernised twin-turboprop platform. The aircraft completed its first flight on May 2, 2026, from Oberpfaffenhofen in Germany, initiating a broader flight test campaign ahead of the programme s planned market introduction.
The Do228 NXT is an updated version of the long-serving Do228 utility aircraft, developed for applications including passenger transport, cargo operations, surveillance, and special mission roles. The upgraded platform retains the aircraft s established short take-off and landing (STOL) capability while integrating modernised systems, manufacturing refinements, and selective lightweight structural enhancements intended to improve operational flexibility and lifecycle performance.
The programme also incorporates fibre-reinforced composite components in selected secondary structures and aerodynamic elements to support corrosion resistance, durability, and incremental weight optimisation. Such material integration reflects broader trends in regional and utility aircraft development, where composite components are increasingly used to improve maintenance efficiency and operational longevity without requiring a complete airframe redesign.
It is important to us that the majority of the manufacturing steps for the Do228 NXT take place in Germany and Europe so that we can guarantee quality and a stable supply chain, said Florian Rohe, managing director of GA-ATS. We are therefore pleased about the continued cooperation, which will contribute significantly to the successful market launch of our Do228 NXT this year [2026].
Craig Simpson, managing director of GA-ATS, described the first flight as the culmination of years of programme development across the company s engineering and production teams. The first flight of the NXT demonstrator is the culmination of years of dedicated work across all departments. It is a true reflection of the expertise and commitment of our entire team in Oberpfaffenhofen. The Do228 NXT is not just an upgrade it is our answer to the demands of modern aviation.
According to the company, the demonstrator aircraft will now undergo additional testing to evaluate aircraft handling, mission capability, and operational performance under varied flight conditions. The programme reflects ongoing efforts across the aerospace sector to modernise proven aircraft platforms through targeted structural updates, manufacturing improvements, and selective integration of lightweight composite technologies.
