ASTM International has issued a call for papers on hemp-lime building materials for a special issue of its Journal of Testing and Evaluation (JTE). The initiative aims to gather research on the characterization, testing, and performance of hemp-lime materials, which combine plant-based hemp shives with a lime-based binder for construction applications. (ASTM International)
Hemp-lime, often referred to as hempcrete, is a bio-based construction material made by combining the woody inner core of the hemp plant with lime-based binders. Unlike conventional structural concrete, it is generally used as a non-load-bearing infill or insulating material. Its low density, moisture-buffering behaviour, and thermal properties have attracted interest in building-envelope applications.
The special issue is intended to address the need for reliable test methods and comparable performance data as hemp-lime materials gain wider attention. Relevant research areas include mechanical and thermal performance, moisture behaviour, durability, material characterization, and the development of standardized testing procedures. (ASTM International)
Material variability remains an important consideration for hemp-lime construction. Hemp shive properties, binder formulations, mix proportions, compaction, and curing conditions can influence density, thermal conductivity, moisture transport, and mechanical behaviour. Consistent testing and reporting can help researchers and construction professionals compare formulations and assess their suitability for different building applications.
The call provides an opportunity for researchers and practitioners working on bio-based construction materials to contribute experimental findings, evaluation methods, and technical analysis. The resulting research is expected to support a clearer understanding of hemp-lime performance and the testing approaches needed to assess it.
ASTM International develops voluntary consensus standards used across industries to establish common methods for testing materials, products, and systems. Research published through its Journal of Testing and Evaluation can contribute to the technical evidence base used in standards development and material qualification.
The special issue places hemp-lime within the broader effort to improve the measurement and evaluation of lower-impact construction materials. Better testing methods and more consistent performance data could help inform material selection, building design, and the development of standards for bio-based construction systems.
