Carbon Fiber (CF), which entered the industry in the late 1960s, has seen a 2000% increase (6.5 kilotons (kt) in 1993 to ~150 kt in 2023) in the global demand in terms of volume in the last 50 years but, the recyclability scenario for the material has progressed at a much slower pace.

As of 2024, only 15% of the globally generated Carbon Fiber waste gets recycled and a majority of the waste still ends up in landfills. This is because of both a gap in the recycling capacity, as well as the absence of a highly efficient industry-ready method for the recovery of (CF) from scrapped parts in the market. The gap between the waste accumulated and the present global recycling capacity is so huge that even if all the major CF recycling companies operate at nameplate capacity, 50% of the waste would still go untreated.
